Stuart Broad ready to shoulder big role in his 100th Test

Mention Stuart Broad and the first thing that would come to the minds of most Indian fans is the England all-rounder being smashed for six sixes in an over by Yuvraj Singh in the 2007 World Twenty20 encounter in Durban.

You basically remember performances against your team or in your country. Broad has played three Tests in India, taking two wickets. Those scalps came from his one game in 2008. On his last tour in 2012, he went wicketless in two Tests.

It could also be due to the fact that his career has been overshadowed a bit by the sultan of swing, James Anderson.

However, if you look at his numbers, Stuart Broad comes across as a giant figure in the current England team. Since the World T20 thrashing nine years ago, the lanky fast bowler has gone on to take 360 Test wickets.

Imposing figure

And for those who can look beyond Tendulkar’s and Laxman’s stumps flying during India’s whitewash by England in the 2011 series, it was Broad who caused the mayhem, winning the Man-of-the-Series award for his 25 wickets in four games.

His record in India needs lot of improvement for him to become as well-known as Anderson, but as England enter another battle in India, the 30-year-old will not be short of inspiration. The first game of the 2016 series, starting in Rajkot on Wednesday, will be Broad’s 100th Test – a mark of his fitness, skill and longevity.

Big role

More than this milestone, Stuart Broad has a massive responsibility to shoulder. With Anderson injured and England’s spin attack shallow, they will depend heavily on Broad for inspiration and wickets.

The Nottinghamshire player is excited at the impending milestone and the challenge of leading the attack.

“I am aware how special an achievement it is because of the players that have come before me. Actually, what excites me more is this 100th game being the start of a huge series for us as well.

“There is no bigger occasion than starting a series in India, against the No 1 team in the world. It’s great to get a milestone being in such an important game because we know how vital it is to start these tours well. We are getting there and we are about ready to go,” said Stuart Broad after a practice session on Monday.

“I will say my character has always been someone who likes being in big games.”
