KPL 2016: Team Mysuru Warriors

Mysuru Warriors

Mysuru Warriors, who won the Karnataka Premier League (KPL) in 2014, by pipping Belagavi Panthers in a tense final, will look to get back to winning ways after putting up a disappointing show last season. Manish Pandey will lead the franchise, and the squad has a heady mix of aggressive batsmen, resourceful bowlers and handy all-rounders.

In the KPL auction held last month, Mysuru lapped up Jonathan Rongsen, Railways’ batsman, for a sum of INR 3.5 lakh, one of the highest bids at this year’s auction. Vyshak Vijay Kumar, the 19-year-old medium pacer, was bought by the franchise for INR 3.2 lakh. Vyshak represented his home city back in 2014 when he accounted for eight wickets in his opening two matches.

Jagadeesha Suchith, the slow left-arm orthodox bowler, who has played 25 Twenty20 (T20) games in his career, has been retained by the franchise. Suchith is one of the younger members of the squad, and has put up consistent performances for the Under-16, Under-19 and Under-23 teams for the state.

Suchith’s noteworthy performances landed him a contract with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise – Mumbai Indians – in the 2015 auction. The left-arm spinner brings variety to the attack. Krishnappa Gowtham, the explosive all-rounder, and Arjun Hoysala, the opening batsman, were also retained prior to this year’s auction.

Mysuru recently made the headlines by roping in Brad Haddin, the former Australian wicket-keeper-batsman, as a mentor for this season. The presence of Haddin in the dressing room will surely add value to the side.

Haddin, who is the first overseas cricketer to be associated with the KPL brand, is expected to bring valuable insights to the table. “We are delighted to have Haddin on board as a mentor for Mysuru Warriors for the upcoming season. We are sure that his experience in the international arena will bring in a lot of exposure to our players, and will help them reach the next level,” Arjun Ranga, the owner of the franchise, said.

Rx. Murali, the head coach of the set-up, concurred with Ranga’s views and stated that a player of Haddin’s stature and pedigree will help the side. “The experience that he (Haddin) brings in having played at the highest level cannot be traded for anything. He has brought in a lot of clarity in (our) approach. What happened last year is history, and we will be starting afresh. Our aim is to win the championship this time.”

Mysuru didn’t have a great time last season as they won just two games and finished seventh, just above the bottom-placed side, Rockstars.
