Bangladesh vs England 1st ODI Report | Analysis
Brief scores: England 309/8 in 50 overs (Ben Stokes 101, Jos Buttler 63, Ben Duckett 60; Mashrafe Mortaza 2-52) beat Bangladesh 288 in 47.5 overs (Imrul Kayes 112, Shakib Al Hasan 79; Jake Ball 5-51, Adil Rashid 4-49) by 21 runs.
Bangladesh crossed the 300 mark in an ODI for only 9 times among their 314 ODI matches excluding today’s game. When batting second is considered, this number mitigates to 3, however, they managed to win all those three games. A conventional appliance was apparent in those matches- one opener had to play a 90+ inning and one batsman had to finish the game with a stormy cameo. Bangladesh had fulfilled the first prerequisite but failed to do the second one and eventually it cost the game for them. England won the first match of 3 match ODI series by 21 runs and leads the series by 1-0.
Kayes was majestic with bat and scored his second ton after six years. His ton substantiates his heroic venture in another way as he accomplished that hundred playing with a cramp. But at the end it proved worthless for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh were plying steadily during the initial phase of their inning. Tamim was seemed shaky but it was compensated by Kayes’ magnificent shots all around the ground. However, Tamim departed soon trying to pull an offside delivery from the debutant Jake Ball and only managed a top-edge. Shabbir was teeming with confidence as soon as he walked to the pitch and quickly scored 18 runs in just 10 balls. Shabbir’s adventurous journey was put to an end by the ‘Superman’ Willey at the boundary line and assisted Ball to secure his second wicket on debut.
After Shabbir’s departure, things were swift and exquisite for Bangladesh. World Cup hero Mahmudullah and Kayes were playing superbly and made a partnership of 50 runs. The leggy Rashid then came to the plot, Mahmudullah was caught at deep leg square after playing a slog sweep against the spin. Mushfiq later followed him playing the same shot again; once proved effectual shot for him only prolonged his disappointment in the international arena.
Since then, Kayes and Shakib prevailed over English bowlers. Shakib was steady at first, but as time went on he became more dominating, scored his 31st ODI fifty in a rash and then started to hit boundaries in almost every over. 118 run partnership was broken when Shakib got caught at short mid-leg. If Shakib’s fall gave England hope, then Mosaddek’s departure at the very next delivery certainly brought England to the game. Bangladesh was put on the back-foot when Adil Rashid sent Mashrafe to the stand at the very next over.
Bangladeshi batsmen’s hardships against leg spin continued as Adil Rashid forced Kayes to get stumped in a wide ball. England were hasty at the end, Jake Ball secured a fifer and became the first Englishman to do so in an ODI debut. Bangladesh lost their last 6 wickets in just 19 runs.
Prior to Bangladesh inning, England managed to put a total of 309 runs on the board by losing 8 wickets. Ben Stokes scored his maiden ODI hundred and thanks goes to Mahmudullah and Mosharraf Rubel as well, as they put down two easy catches when Stokes was on 69 and 71 respectively. Another Ben, the debutant, Duckett scored a confident knock of 60 runs. Together they put a massive partnership of 153 runs. Later Jos Buttler played a captain’s knock of 63 by 37 balls which eventually helped England to cross 300 mark. Mashrafe, Shafiul and Shakib took two wickets each. First wicket of Shakib helped him to spot fifth place in a gorgeous club of highest wicket takers on home soil. He surmounted Aussie legend Shane Warne who took 134 wickets in 84 ODI matches. Shakib al Hasan has secured 136 wickets so far in 89 matches.
The next game of the series will be played at 9th October on the same venue.
