England Vs Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Tour of England 2016, Fourth ODI, 29th June 2016 at Kennington Oval, London, Cricket Highlights
A sizzling knock of 162 from the English opener, Jason Roy, guided his team to a 6 wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the 4th ODI and helped them clinch the One-day series.
In a rain-curtailed game that caused the match to reduce down to 42 overs per side, the Lankan batsmen amassed a huge score of 305 runs on the board with 4 out of their top 5 batsmen scoring fifty-plus runs. First, it was a partnership of 128 runs between Kusal Mendis and Gunathilaka, which stabilized the Sri Lankan innings. Later on, it was the quickfire innings from Mathews (67*) and Chandimal (63) that got Sri Lanka past the 300-run mark.
Chasing a revised total of 308 runs, England lost Moeen Ali early for the score of 18. However, that didn’t affect the chase at all, as both, Jason Roy and Joe Root, took the attack to the opposition bowlers and scored the runs at almost 8 RPO. Roy was in no mood to slow down as he brought up his century off just 74 balls. He also went on to record the highest score (162) by an English opener, surpassing Andrew Strauss and got his team close to the victory line. In the end, it was Buttler and Bairstow, who finished off the innings. As a result, England also registered their second highest successful run chase in ODI cricket.
